Therapy is unique in its capability to both objectively and supportively help us look at ourselves. Therapy provides a space to dig deep and examine the aspects of our internal experience that we typically avoid, particularly negative emotions, difficult thoughts, and problematic patterns in our relationships. Therapy helps us gain clarity and insight about ourselves and ourselves in relation to others. It is this clarity that ultimately leads to opportunities for growth and change.
Research indicates that the brain itself can be changed or molded throughout our lives. This plasticity means that our lives can be improved long-term. We can effectively change our minds. It is possible to think differently so you can live differently. A therapist is simply a specialized helper to that end.
What should I expect from therapy?
Therapy sessions are scheduled time set aside to address your own needs and shape your own point of view. Therapy provides a safe, caring place to gain clarity about your internal experience, to examine difficult thoughts or challenging emotions. We will work together to deepen your understanding of the interconnections between your thinking, your emotions, and your behavior. We will also examine problematic relationships and how you can begin to understand and change your role in these relationships.
How do you protect my confidentiality?
I want you to feel safe and comfortable sharing what’s important to you in our sessions, knowing this information will be kept private. My practice places the utmost importance on maintaining your confidentiality and your trust. To that end, I have very thoughtful policies in place to maintain your privacy. The law respects the doctor-patient privilege with a few exceptions (e.g., if an individual poses a dangerous threat to self or others). You will find more details about your confidentiality in my consent form. You are also welcome to discuss any concerns you have at any time.
What can I expect in the first session when I see a therapist?
The first session, your treatment planning session, is focused on gaining an understanding of your unique needs and concerns. We’ll talk about what has brought you to therapy at this time as well as other aspects of your life including, family, work, and relationships. The goal of this session is to build a collaborative, safe space for our work together, to gain clarity about your concerns, and to establish goals for our work together.
How long does the therapy process last?
Ultimately, I believe the goal of therapy is to make my services to you obsolete, for you to learn new skills and new ways of understanding yourself that you can apply to experience growth and change. The length of time you spend in treatment depends on several factors, including the nature of your concerns, how long you’ve struggled with those concerns, how much time and energy you are willing to invest in treatment, both in and out of session, and your goals. During our treatment planning session, we will discuss your goals and treatment plan.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept payment from some insurance plans (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and Medicare) as well as healthcare flexible spending plans and cash or credit cards. Please see the Insurance/Payment page for more information about payment.
